In San Francisco, gift shoppers head to Union Square, Hayes Valley, Valencia Street and the Ferry Building Marketplace.
The city is small and hilly, so walking between shops adds up; use the streetcar or a ride, and order online for anything bulky.
Buying for a coworker
If you are not close, choose something universal: a good coffee, a plant, a small desk item. If you are close, a shared joke can make a gift feel warm without being too much.

If the birthday is tomorrow
Leaving it late is easy to fix: Flowers, breakfast deliveries and a personalized game arrive fast, and an oin game is usually emailed within an hour of payment. Add a cake or a card for the table.
